Why Should You Reverse Engineer an App Instead of Inventing One?
Reverse engineering removes the single most expensive unknown in software: whether anyone wants the thing. A popular app in your niche has already proven demand, proven pricing, and proven distribution — three questions that normally take a year and a lot of money to answer.
Inventing from scratch means you validate an idea and build it at the same time. Remixing means you only have to be better at one specific thing, and the market has already told you which thing that is.

Group them into recurring complaint themes. For each theme, give me:
- the theme in one line
- how many reviews mention it
- 2 verbatim quotes
- what a competing app would have to do to fix it
- whether fixing it is a feature, a pricing change, or an accuracy problem
Rank the themes by how often they appear. Ignore one-off complaints
and anything about a temporary bug or outage.
For meal trackers, the same four themes come back almost every time: the photo recognition guesses portion sizes badly, the free tier caps scans at a number that makes the app useless, restaurant and home-cooked meals are not in the database, and the subscription is hard to cancel. Every one of those is a build instruction.
Your job is to pick one theme and be dramatically better at it — not to fix all four. “The meal tracker that gets portion sizes right because it asks you one follow-up question” is a product. “A better meal tracker” is not.
What Is a PRD and Why Does It Pre-Write Your App?
A Product Requirements Document, or PRD, is a single file that defines who you are building for, the specific pain you are solving, the screens involved, the data model, and the libraries you will use. It matters because Claude Code builds from a spec far more reliably than it builds from a conversation.
The mechanical benefit is the libraries. When the PRD names the authentication provider, the payment provider, the image model, and the database, roughly 20% of your app is already written before you touch a keyboard — it exists as packages you are wiring together rather than code you are authoring.

Is reverse engineering an app legal?
Yes, when you are copying the concept rather than the code or the brand. Building a meal tracker because meal trackers sell well is ordinary competition; copying a competitor’s source code, assets, name, or icon is not.
How many negative reviews do I need to read?
