Ponytail cuts token usage by making Claude Code write less code in the first place. It loads a rule set that walks the agent down a decision ladder before it writes anything: does this need to exist, is it already in the codebase, is there a standard library or platform feature that covers it, is it a one-liner. Only after all of that does it write the minimum viable code.

On benchmarked Claude Code sessions editing FastAPI and React repositories, Ponytail’s authors report 54% less code, up to 94% in heavy over-engineering cases, along with 20% lower API cost and 27% faster runs while keeping safety checks intact. Less generated code means fewer output tokens now and fewer input tokens every time the agent rereads that file later.

How Does OmniRoute Give You Free Tokens?

OmniRoute is a local AI gateway that routes your requests across 352 providers through one endpoint, so when one provider’s free quota runs out it falls back to the next automatically. Its docs count about 1.47 billion free tokens a month across documented free tiers, with 52 providers that are permanently free and need no key.
